Meet Autumn’s Cosiest Fashion Trend: Shearling

It almost makes up for the end of summer.

Who wouldn’t to feel the cosy embrace of a teddy bear as we move into the cooler months, but what if it could also be chic?

Shearling is everywhere at the moment, after making its debut on the autumn winter New York and Paris Fashion Week runways thanks to brands including Stella McCartney, and Coach, with labels such as Celine, Bottega Veneta and JW Anderson also embracing the fluffy textile.

But you don’t need a Bottega Veneta budget to buy into the trend for the material best known for its use in the jackets first worn by Air Force pilots.

Bags, shoes and hats featuring the nubbly textile have also proliferated on the high street as well as in luxury land, which makes sense as we’ve all been craving tactility and comfort as we emerge from the pandemic.

For the ultimate shearling cocoon, look to Rihanna and Gigi Hadid, who both recently stepped out in shearling coats, the former in a tonal peach ensemble and the latter in understated neutrals.

Whether you decide to embrace investment dressing with a shearling coat or jacket, or simply to add a little cosiness to your outfit with a more affordable accessory, there are options aplenty when it comes to shearling this autumn and winter.
