Meet Your New Winter Shoes (And They Aren’t Boots)

Sometimes you just have to embrace cold ankles

Felicity Robinson

For too long, black boots have been the mainstay of my winter wardrobe. They’re dependable, suited to most sartorial situations and, honestly, I’m a bit bored of them. And recently, in those odd (ha!) moments when procrastination strikes, I’ve found myself scrolling through The Outnet, looking for a spot of sparkle, a shoe that’s not afraid to make a fuss in yellow snakeskin or some flirty diamante sparkles. But until now, I’ve let fear hold me back.

Won’t I get cold feet in a slingback? Will diamante die a horrible death in a downpour?

“Not everyone feels the cold like you do,” says Tara, our shopping editor, who selected this week’s shopping picks. “And a slingback will only give you cold heels – your toes will be fine.”

Right. So assuming I’m willing to accept that, what should I choose?

“The pointed toe of the Matt and Nat and Zara shoes are really leg lengthening and will look great with a classic straight-leg jean or pant,” advises Tara. “Otherwise the Marant loafer is a smart investment piece, with the snakeskin giving it a nice twist. I also love the Mansur Gavriel – white is still trending in shoes and the leather is amazing – it’s a brand that does leather really well.”

For a statement shoe like the Schutz mule, Tara suggests keeping the rest of your outfit monochrome (and avoiding puddles). Unlike trainers, which are still a bit difficult for evening, flats like these can walk right through from day to night. Some influencers wear them with socks, but that’s too directional for me.

Happy shopping! Stay cool (in these shoes, your ankles won’t have a choice).
