2020 Fashion Trends You Already Own

If you’ve held on to your gold hoops and boot cut jeans, well done

Felicity Robinson

There’s a ‘rule’ in fashion that trends follow a 20-year cycle, so a look that was achingly hip two decades ago will fall out of favour before returning just in time for our daughters to wear it. Think flares in the ’70s and then again in the ’90s, or padded shoulders, or mini skirts.

So it’s probably unsurprising that bootcut jeans, so beloved of Paris Hilton and other early Noughties pop icons, are staging a comeback, along with statement hoop earrings and leather. Marni and Bottega Veneta both showed bright leather this season, but leather (real or vegan) in any incarnation still feels current. And a hoop – the failsafe earring that you’re sure to have in your jewellery case – suddenly seems like a sophisticated new alternative to a drop.

1. Bootcut jeans

A good bootcut lengthens your legs, says our shopping editor, Tara Morris. “It seems to balance out your figure.” This time round bootcut jeans are higher waisted, with a subtle kick. “The cropped versions – which have been around a while – look great with a sandal or trainer,” adds Tara, “while a full-length pant looks elegant with a heel and tucked-in t-shirt.”

2. Leather (real or vegan)

Whether it’s 1970’s style at Celine or colourful at Marni and Ferragamo, leather adds instant edge to any outfit. This Nanushka jacket, below, feels pleasingly vintage (the kind of thing you’d pick up in an op shop), while the Ganni’s wide-leg pant and Tibi’s faux leather shirt are more directional. Ganni pairs the pant with a leather khaki shirt, but it’d look great with a plain t-shirt or simple blouse. “As much as these are trend pieces, they won’t date,” says Tara.

3. Hoops

This season’s hoop earrings are bigger and chunkier than ’90s shoulder-grazers, says Tara. “They’re an easy way to dress up a plain dress and they work with most hairstyles.” The best bit? If you don’t have any in your jewellery case, there’s a huge range at every price point, including these Asos rings that look far more expensive than they are.
