Meet Our New Book Club Choice: Rodham

Ready, set, read!

By Anna Saunders

The New York Times described it as “an ingenious conceit”. The New Yorker likened it to fan fiction. Vox called it “wildly compelling”.

Me? I devoured Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld, which reimagines Hillary Rodham Clinton’s life had she not married Bill.

It’s a clever premise (and it’s familiar territory for Sittenfeld whose book American Wife offered a fictionalised take on former First Lady Laura Bush’s early life) and it rockets along like a runaway train, blending real-life events with fiction. Rodham is populated by a cast of familiar faces from Bill Clinton to, yes, Donald Trump, and it asks tough questions about the factors that thwart women from reaching the top tiers of public life.

This month, Rodham is our book club choice. We’ll be chatting all things Rodham – and pulling together “exclusive extras” about the book – in our Facebook group book club (which you can join here) on Tuesday, 16 June at 7pm. You can buy the book here.

I can’t wait to hear what you thought of the book – I’m dying to talk about it!

See you there.
