Why We’re Raiding Grandma’s Jewellery Box

STORIES

BY HANNAH-ROSE YEE

Jewellery was once so fine you could barely see it. Little whispers of gold chains around necks and tiny diamonds tucked away in the recesses of the ear. These days, we’re opting for big, crystal-embellished brooches, gobstopper pearl earrings, and thick, bold necklaces.

The vibe is pure grandma: these pieces wouldn’t look out of place in your nan’s jewellery box.

“Gold necklaces are getting larger, or they’re getting double links, or they’re a choker.”

Lucy Wood, stylist

The secret is in the way you wear it. While finer jewellery is generally layered, more substantial styles can be worn alone as standalone pieces.

Chunky chains and pearls are beginner’s level Nan jewellery and easily adaptable into your existing wardrobe. Brooches are a little trickier; they’re eye-catching and unforgettable, so you’ve got to wear them confidently.

Here are some of our favourite statement pieces, for you and your grandma.
