Of all the things that Australia does well (world-class beaches, deadly snakes, lockdowns), it’s swimwear that stands out for us this season.
Yes, there are established brands like Seafolly and Jets that continue to produce great styles, but some of the most exciting pieces, often sustainably produced, come from smaller designers.
“I’d recommend checking out Matteau, Bondi Born, Fella, Zulu & Zephyr, IIXIST and Hakea,” says stylist Lucy Wood, who chose this week’s sets and swimsuits. It’s here that you’ll see the swimwear in block colour that’s one of the key trends of the season.
“To complement the minimalist look, there’s a lot of neutral black, white and chocolate brown,” adds Lucy, “but also brighter block colour for the bold.”

The beauty of block colour is that you can mix tops and bottoms to create your perfect swimwear look, or add to pieces you already own, which feels like a very modern, playful approach, says Lucy.
That same easy sense of individualism applies to bikini bottoms (a relief for those of us who may have added a few Covid kilos).
“Most brands offer a range of styles, from teeny briefs and high-legs through to 1950s-style full briefs,” says Lucy. “But possibly most prominent are the mid-rise bikini briefs, which are the perfect balance between the low- and high-rise.”
And for a classic black swimsuit, we love Bondi Born, which has everything from one-pieces with plunging necklines and straps to a simple, yet elegant rashie (our personal favourite).
