The Late-Summer Shoe To Love

Why the fisherman’s sandal is having its moment in the sun

By Felicity Robinson

A new entry in the list of “practical shoes to have in your wardrobe”, fisherman’s sandals are this summer’s white canvas sneaker, and easier to keep clean. They’re a sandal, but the sensible type you can wear to ride your bike (without your toes curling over the edge of the sole as you pedal). They play nicely with a relaxed suit or a loose summer dress. And when the weather turns cooler – even though we can’t imagine it this weekend – they look lovely with a simple sock.

Stylist Lucy Wood, who selected the sandals below, also likes them for their novelty.

“After a couple of years of the same footwear trends going round and round, it’s nice to see a shape we haven’t seen in a while,” she says.

The sandal was originally pioneered by European fishermen, according to some sources, or else they’re a take on the gladiator sandal popularised by, well, gladiators. A sleek leather style in black or tan won’t date, adds Lucy, but look to a chunkier, rubber sole for a more modern take.

“As they are a heavier sandal, I think they look best with classic pieces,” she adds. “Tailored shorts or wide-leg pants and a buttoned shirt or tank. Their slightly masculine feel means they also look great with block-colour cotton dresses – in neutral shades for extra chic points.”
