Meet The Shoes You’re About To See Everywhere

In their Spring 2023 collection last September, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons incorporated single-strap pumps into 47 of the 55 looks they presented. And they weren’t the only ones mad for Mary Janes. Bally, Sportmax, Emilia Wickstead, Fendi and others also showed their own versions of the classic buckled shoe that most of us first wore to school.

“Perhaps it’s the whole Y2K trend, but Mary Janes have appealed to a lot of designers over the past couple of seasons, which is why we’re starting to see so many of them right now,” says stylist Bree Macara, who selected the beautiful shoes below. “There’s a huge range available, from punk versions with lots of straps and exaggerated soles to a shoe that’s really refined and almost waspy. They can be cute but also a bit subversive at the same time, which I love.”

Bree will be wearing hers (a vintage pair of patent Saint Laurents) with a wide-leg tailored pant or cropped jeans, or else a straight column skirt or maxi. “I like them with something neat, almost masculine,” she says. “They’re the perfect replacement for a sandal once the weather cools.”

On that note, Mary Janes also look lovely with a sock – go for a fine-knit ankle sock that’s prim, but not too proper.
