If there was one fashion trend that never made an iota of sense to me, it was the itsy-bitsy handbags that dominated the runways a couple of years ago. So tiny they barely held a cell phone – let alone the tangle of lipsticks, perennially uncapped ballpoint pens and a laptop that I lug around – these handbags were never meant for me.

Well, happy days because big, slouchy bags are back, and this week stylist Lucy Wood has selected eight of the best. “I love it when a trend comes along that feels practical and useful, too,” she says.

Take your pick between neutrals, darker wintry colours or chic black, sling it over your shoulder and you’re ready to go. Because sometimes, size does matter.
