3 Ways To Style A Slip Skirt

A fashion editor models modern ways to wear a classic

By Amanda Woodward-Brown

After spending the best part of two decades writing about fashion, I am pretty well-versed in what constitutes a wardrobe staple: a boxy white tee, perfectly-cut black trousers, a classic oversized trench… In summary, designs so timeless that they will never fall out of style.

But I recently discovered the versatility of a piece I hadn’t considered before, which also deserves a place on this list: the slip skirt.

Admittedly, a slip skirt isn’t particularly novel; in fact it’s a design that has been around since early last century. The reason for its omission from my wardrobe  is simply because I’ve always preferred the iconic 90s slip dress. But the skirt is much more versatile.

I recently discovered the versatility of the slip skirt

Just take the three looks shown here. The skirt segues effortlessly from work to weekend, or an evening out. It also transitions easily through the seasons – just throw on a boyfriend knit and pointed-toe boots to take it through to autumn, then layer an oversized bomber in winter.

Oh, and did I mention it suits every shape, too? The bias cut gives a slight stretch, meaning the fabric skims the figure to flattering effect. If you do take the plunge and invest (note: an ivory or coffee brown goes with almost everything), here are three ideas on how to style it now.

Take it into the office with heels, a long-line top (belted for definition)  and sleek jewellery. I love the collaboration between Constantina Vintage and Reciety for special one-off jewels.

Amanda wears: Elka Collective skirt ($249), ESSE Studios top ($450), heels from Alias Mae ($109.95), and earrings from Reciety x Constantina Vintage ($495). The belt is the stylist’s own (similar here)

The fluid form of the skirt sits well with a crisp, short-sleeved shirt. Sunglasses and flat sandals make it work for the weekend or school run.

Amanda wears: Elka Collective skirt ($249), shirt from LMND ($101), LOEWE sunglasses ($505), and vintage earrings ($495).

Play with proportion and juxtapose the high-waisted silhouette with a crop top, like this sequinned number by Aje.

Amanda wears: Elka Collective skirt ($249), Aje top ($395), and Receity x Constantina Vintage earrings ($495), cuff ($770) and bangle ($770).
