The collarless style may have been popularised by Chanel, but this season, designers are taking the trend in their own stride. “It’s definitely making that off-duty French girl look very achievable,” says stylist Lucy Wood. “A collarless jacket… is timeless, and will happily work in your wardrobe for years to come. And they’ll offer more warmth and personality compared to a jacket like a blazer.”
In order to keep from looking too prim and proper, Wood recommends styling back the jacket with casual everyday favourites: denim and a tee or low-key knit underneath. “Keep it simple and casual,” she advises. “These jackets work best when they are the statement of the outfit.
On occasions where a more dressed-up approach is key, play with the proportions. “High-waisted tailored pants work seamlessly with a cropped evening jacket,” she says. But pull it back from the brink of OTT—tweed, hardware, buttons everywhere!—by going with the (colour) flow of your statement piece. “Keep your palette minimal and tonal,” says Wood. Sound advice. Best not to tell the nape of your neck you’re choosing fashion over its protection.
One moment you’re a woman wearing just a tee and plain jeans. The next minute, thanks to the addition of a jacket, you are Charlotte Casiraghi incarnate.
For those who don’t wake up looking like a Chanel muse on a day off, a collarless jacket might just be your entrée into achieving that particular brand of undone-but-expensive cool—with very minimal effort.
For some outfits, putting on a jacket is a regrettable, weather-necessitated move. But when you have the right jacket—say, a boxy, vintage-inspired bouclé one—that move is the outfit itself. It’s transformative. One moment you’re a woman wearing just a tee and plain jeans. The next minute, thanks to the addition of a jacket, you are Charlotte Casiraghi incarnate.
