At a recent beauty event, I noticed several influencers were dressed more practically than usual. Along with their short skirts and evenly tanned legs they were wearing white ankle socks with smart black loafers – and they looked great.
“In my opinion, there’s a sock for every outfit,” says stylist Bree Macara, who boasts an impressive selection. “I love a statement sock, always have. I think it’s my Prada/Dries Van Noten penchant.” Her favourite socks to wear with heels include finely knitted bobby socks from brands such as Falke and Japanese label Tabio (which Bree admits to being difficult to find here).
Stylist Lucy Wood, who selected this week’s shopping picks, agrees that sheer socks work beautifully with slingback heels, enabling us to squeeze a little extra wear out of summer shoes as the nights draw in. By keeping to sophisticated black or grey, you needn’t worry about looking anything other than elegant.
Sporty socks
For a more elevated look, choose sports socks in the same colour or tone as your sneaker. Lucy’s favourite sporty socks are from Ivy Ellis, while Bree loves a fun, colourful sock from Sportsgirl, “to allow sneakers into an outfit when they usually wouldn’t be invited”. A cute ankle sock peeking out from a sneaker and a wide-leg pant feels pleasingly 90s.
Evening socks
A quick way to freshen up your evening look is to add a sheer sock to your heel. (We think a low heel or slingback works best with a skirt or dress.) If you’d prefer to dip your toe into the trend, try a sparkly sock under trousers, such as the COS version below. Prada, Dries Van Noten and Simone Rocha offer the most luxurious options; Falke and Levante are Bree’s preferred choice.
Socks with flats
US brand Tibi has long advocated a ballet shoe plus sock combo, so much so that this season they’ve released a red ballet flat with a built-in vermilion sock. Lucy believes a grey wool sock provides an elegant contrast to a ballet flat, while influencers clearly love white ankle socks with a black loafer, as do we.
