Call me nosey, but I’ve always loved the chance to peek into the morning routines of successful women. Part voyeuristic-thrill, part instruction-manual-to-life, a glimpse into someone’s morning routine can reveal their favourite products, tips and rituals, not to mention insights into how they spend those precious morning minutes. (Answer: always more efficiently than me.)
This week, we interviewed three brilliant women – designer Poppy Lissiman, collage artist and photographer Kitty Callaghan, and influencer Talisa Sutton – about how they get out the door, fast.
One thing they all had in common? Dermalogica’s new Prisma Protect SPF 15, a master multi-tasker that protects skin while the advanced formula refracts external light and converts it into a luminous and radiant glow.
Poppy Lissiman
If you’re a fan of the cult ‘Le Skinny’ sunglasses, then you’ve got WA-based accessories designer Poppy Lissiman to thank. With a host of famous fans from Gigi and Bella Hadid to Leandra Medine, Poppy has a singular aesthetic and sense of style.
My Morning
“I fluctuate between being a morning person and a late-ish riser… I travel a lot so depending on my time zone I sometimes fall into weird habits for a while, until my [body] clock adjusts.
“When I’m on a regular schedule I get up around 7am and go to F45. Then it’s home for a cup of tea, avocado on toast and to check my most important emails.”
My Beauty
“I wash my face with Dermalogica products, including my absolute favourite Dermalogica product Calm Water Gel. Some days I’ll go mostly make-up free with just Dermalogica Skinperfect Primer SPF30 and a bit of lip tint.
“I finish off with natural minimal make-up and a loud pair of sunglasses.”
My Style
“My fail-safe uniform, rain, hail or shine is sneakers, Issey Miyake Pleats Please trousers – I have so many pairs in different colours and prints – and whatever top works best, either T-shirt or jumper.”
Kitty Callaghan
Multi-media artist, collager, photographer and all-round cool-girl Kitty has endless creative talent, and has collaborated with the likes of Ellery, RUSSH (she is their contributing editor), Harpers Bazaar and Nobody Denim.
My Morning
“I’ve always been quite a night owl. We sleep under skylight some of the time [she lives in a creative co-op in Sydney’s Newtown with her boyfriend, artist Jamie Preisz (who won the Archibald Packing Room Prize in 2018)] so we usually wake up to natural light. I like to have a bit of time to wake-up, shower and have a cup of coffee before using technology.
“When I’m getting ready in the morning I like to listen to music or a podcast in the shower. I like The Daily by The New York Times for a snapshot into what’s happening in the world.”
My Beauty
“I cleanse daily with Dermalogica PreCleanse and Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. If I have time, I use a jade roller as a bit of a ritual, before applying a rich moisturiser or serum. I am super pale, so sunscreen is always my number-one priority.”
“I rarely wear make-up, and if I do it’s usually just mascara or some illuminator. For special occasions I wear Nars foundation and concealer.”
My Style
“When it comes to my personal style, I’m fairly eclectic with a vintage feel. I love to wear boots, and I love winter for blazers and boots. I recently splurged on a [vintage] Chanel handbag that seems to ‘make’ any outfit.”
Talisa Sutton
The influencer and graphic designer radiates style in everything she does – from her chic quarterly online magazine Badlands Journal (which she publishes with her husband) to her love of interiors, fashion and beauty.
My Morning
“I never used to be a morning person, but throughout my pregnancy I have definitely become a lighter sleeper, so now I’m usually up at about 6-6.30am. Sometimes our 13-year-old Chihuahua, Truffles, wakes me before my alarm goes off, but usually I’m already making my way out of bed.
“I used to live for my two coffees a day, but now I’ll either have a tea or a decaf coffee, so my morning ritual has definitely changed.
“My husband and I love to sit and catchup on the news while we have our coffee and breakfast (I’ve been craving mangoes and granola lately!). We’ll usually chat about what we have on for the day ahead and squeeze in a cuddle with our dog before we get moving for the day.”
My Beauty
“My skin was more combination before pregnancy, and I was prone to congestion. Now it’s on the dryer side, and I feel the less I do the better. So gentle cleansing, moisturiser and lots of natural oils are key.
“I cleanse with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel in the shower, then I follow with the new Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance. I never leave the house without Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF15 on my face.
“I’m a minimal girl when it comes to make-up. I use a Benefit brow mascara, with a MAC felt tip brow pen to fill in any extra bits, then I curl my lashes and use a little NARS concealer. For special occasions I’ll add a bit of bronzer and highlighter.”
My Style
“My pregnancy work wardrobe is either a ribbed black fitted dress or a black silk skirt with a button up shirt. I’ll then add some black sandals and sunglasses (my favourite old Celines) and I’m out the door. For the finishing touches, I love a coin necklace or a gold bangle, and while I couldn’t wear perfume for months due to sensitivity to smells, I might spritz a little something or dab on some essential oil.”
