Apologies to our northern readers, but this week’s shopping edit addresses the important issue of how to stay toasty now the temperature in the rest of the country has sunk to single figures. (I’m sure those of you basking in north Queensland’s winter sun won’t feel too put out.)
So, the first thing to notice about the selection of scarves and hats below is the absence of pom-poms or bobbles. “They’re not ‘not’ on trend,” says our shopping editor, Tara, diplomatically. “But I’m actually really loving the simple, minimalist fisherman’s beanie. The bright pink Ganni is a fun take, and would look amazing with a neutral camel coat and scarf.”
Everlane’s red scarf is also a lovely bright addition to a winter wardrobe – hard to tell from the image below, but it’s actually super long and wraps round your neck at least twice, plus the hole enables you to thread one end through so you don’t have such a bulky knot. We also love the luxe Acne logo scarf, although as Tara points out it’s more of an investment piece. Similarly, the beautiful Baserange wool socks are a treat for your feet (personally, I can’t concentrate on anything if my feet are cold so they’re more of a necessity, really).
Meanwhile, it’s worth considering a stole as an occasional cover-up instead of a jacket. The Uniqlo stole is a steal and very versatile. “It’s half jacket, half scarf – perfect to throw over a dress if you’re feeling chilly and it’s also long enough to belt at the waist,” says Tara. Comes in different patterns, too.
Finally, there’s Albus Lumen’s corduroy bucket hat that enables you to continue wearing this throwback ’90s trend throughout the winter months. It’s also (if you have a small head like me) much more flattering than a beanie. Yes, it’s a tad pricey and yes, it will be copied soon but it’s lovely. And if you buy it now, your cost-per-wear will be minimal. In fact, you’ll be praying for the weather to stay cold, probably.
