Why Minimalism Suddenly Feels So Fresh

In a world of high-voltage Instagram colour, crisp shirts and simple jewellery are a welcome relief

Bright clothes make better pictures, which is the reason Instagram is filled with eye-catching dresses, block colour separates and busy, busy patterns. That’s why this week’s shopping selects feel like a cool glass of water after too many glasses of Fanta.

At first glance, Matteau’s chocolate cotton shirt seems almost aggressively plain, until you see it on the model, the lightness of the fabric providing the perfect drape from her shoulders. Then there’s Zimmerman’s crisp white pant, with a scooped hem that elevates it from simple to special.

“The key to this minimalist, almost man-style look lies in details like these,” says our shopping editor, Tara Morris. “Each piece has a subtle twist that gives it a lovely elegance.” You’re aiming for effortlessness, even though minimalism is anything but. “To pull this off, you need to be fastidious – that means pressed shirts, polished and well-cared for shoes and a luxurious leather pouch.” Hair should be simple, possibly scraped back in a pony if it’s longer, she adds.

Achieve this level of polish and you’ll look just as eye-catching as the most colourful Insta personality, but with an under-stated elegance that’s decidedly more intriguing.
