You may already have the shoe of the summer tucked away in the back of your wardrobe – you know, from the time you went camping with your friends a few years ago. Because Teva sandals, with their utilitarian Velcro straps and rubber soles, have long been worn by outdoorsy types.
You can run through rivers in them, or scale the highest hill. You can also wear them on wild brunchtime adventures with your mates, safe in the knowledge these sandals can survive any unexpected rain shower or almond latte spillage.
Last northern summer, Tevas and Teva-esque sandals were everywhere on Instagram, because they’re very comfortable and they go with everything. They look modern with a little white dress or midi skirt and pleasingly minimalistic with a wide-leg pant.
As a self-confessed sneaker freak who rarely wears a dress, our model Sian Redgrave fell hard for the selection of sandals in our shoot this week. “I loved them – they’re so comfortable,” she says. “I would wear them with socks, though. Eurovision, eat your heart out.” Warm and funny, Redgrave describes her low-key style as “a designer version of Jerry Seinfeld. I’ve never worn skirts or dresses, even as a child,” she laughs. “I remember going to my mum’s friend’s wedding dressed in a Batman outfit.”
After winning The Great Australian Bake Off in 2015, Redgrave has established a career as a chef and food stylist, and has now founded a print magazine called Abbiocco, which is an Italian term for that drowsy feeling when you’ve eaten a little too much food. Each issue will have a theme; the first edition, out next month, is Italian and will pull together food, fashion, photography and anything else that piques the interest of Redgrave and her creative collaborators. “For the last few years, food has been a huge passion,” Regrave says. “But I studied set and costume design at college, and was working in fashion when I won Bake Off. I’m looking forward to exploring those interests again.”
Plain and simple
“I’ve always loved an androgynous look,” says Redgrave, who cites actor Tilda Swinton and design Phoebe Philo as inspirations. “I’ll often layer a sporty piece with something sharp, like a tailored pant, with an old sports t-shirt, a blazer and a cap.” Comfort is important when you spend a lot of time standing up in a kitchen, she adds, which is why she loves the Teva sandals in these shots. “I also find pedicures a great way to relax my tired feet.”
Long Black Dress
“Even though I don’t usually wear dresses, I loved this Camilla and Marc one – mainly because it’s black,” says Redgrave. “It has a lovely neckline and it felt sexy, but not so much that I felt self-conscious in it.” The chunky shoe provides a nice contrast to the subtle elegance of the dress and Redgrave’s striking jewellery. “The bangle is by Lucy Folk and it’s cast from an anchovy,” she explains. “I’m obsessed with anchovies – they’re in all my food.”
Worn with flare
Redgrave is tall – 180 centimetres – which means she looks great in tailored flares. “They give me a good silhouette,” she says. “I also loved this long-sleeved t-shirt with the tie-dye detail. I’m in a bit of a tie-dye phase at the moment – it’s cool.”
In these shots, Sian is wearing an Incu Collection jumper; an Anna Quan pant; and Atmos&here sandals.
