If there was ever a time to embrace summer – and its freedom, fun and fashion – this is it. Instead of dwelling on the Shocking Year That Is Thankfully Nearly Over, let’s set our sights on enjoying the forthcoming summer we all, frankly, deserve.
This week we’ve asked four fashion editors we love – who have collectively worked across Vogue, marie claire and InStyle – to share their top shopping picks.
And because we love fashion, but we’re not such big fans of over-consumption, we’re trying something a little new: we’ve noted where particular pieces have been made locally or created with ethical, sustainable or philanthropic measures in mind.
Here’s the fine print: These notes relate to the specific garment or piece featured. So, for example, even if a brand is generally sustainable but this particular piece is not, we won’t promote the brand’s broader initiatives. Similarly, if a brand is usually not sustainable, but this piece is, we’ll give them credit – because we believe that supporting progressive steps forward is the only way to convince big brands to keep up the good work.

“I’m keeping my wish list simple this season with some easy pieces to inject into my spring wardrobe,” says Kate Darvill, a fashion editor who has worked for Vogue and marie claire. “I’m shopping local and supporting our Australian fashion scene.”
Kate picked these gorgeous mix-and-match separates from Bimby and Roy, saying “I recently came across this brand and fell in love with the prints! They make me feel happy!”
Ethical jewellery Holly Ryan is another favourite, as is swimwear brand Hakea. “Hakea designs great swimwear for Australian women of all shapes and sizes. The styles look great in one tone, but following my mix and match theme this season, I think I’ll opt for a mix and match combo.”
A LMND shirt-and-shorts combo is on her wish list, too. “I always have a classic shirt as a staple in my wardrobe – I always steal my husband’s shirts – but I will be investing in this light crisp shirting options from LMND. The only reason I haven’t bought my shirt and shorts yet, I can’t decide on the colour!”
“I love summer outfitting,” says Lill Jenner, a regular PRIMER contributing fashion editor who has styled for InStyle, marie claire and more.
This summer Lill, who admits she struggled to narrow it down to four pieces, opted for a chic hat from Australian brand Hatmaker, and a long maxi skirt from fellow local favourite Bassike.
She also has her eye on chic gingham separates from swimwear brand Ephemera, as well as some chunky white sandals from The Row.
Lucy Woods is a stylist and former fashion editor at InStyle magazine, and this summer she has her eye on a range of fun pieces, including a patchwork dress from Sea (“I love a multi-purpose dress”) and earrings by Danish label Anni Lu (“classic but still with a bit personality”).
Covid-19 has changed the way she dresses: “I’ve found I’ve been more inclined to be wearing flats lately, even at night,” says Lucy, who chose a dressy satin pair of flats from Carlotha Ray.
And lastly, she’s finally investing in a bucket hat – a trend that emerged last summer and is still going strong. “I’ve had my eye on finding a cute little bucket hat for a while, and love this cotton style with wire brim so that it can be adjusted easily. It’s the perfect packable hat that will be accompanying me on many road trips this summer!”
This summer Tara Morris, PRIMER’s contributing fashion editor and a stylist who has worked for marie claire and The ICONIC, is choosing easy separates.
“I’m so lazy in summer,” she says, pointing to the black slides from Country Road by way of example. “I can’t even be bothered to put a strap around my foot. These slides would be so easy,” she says, adding that chunky footwear is big this summer.
Tara also picked a pair of terry towelling shorts from cool Australian label TERRY. “I wanted to buy these last summer and didn’t.” She likes the loose, flattering A-line cut (“Some terry towelling shorts are a bit too ‘hotpants’ for me”) but points out that TERRY often sells out really quickly, so it’s worth getting in fast.
Fellow Australian label Sir is also on her wish list -“They are doing beautiful pieces right now” – along with a splurge from PRADA. “This is obviously not cheap, but coming out of Covid-19 I feel like something fun.”
