Meet The Must-Have Maxi Skirt Of The Summer

Maxi style, minimum effort

Felicity Robinson

If last year was all about the dress, now it’s the turn of maxi skirts to enjoy a moment in the sun.

Every store and label has a version – from tiered and ruffled at Country Road and Witchery to the chic columns of Bondi Born and Camilla And Marc. “These are definitely statement skirts with strong design elements,” says our shopping editor Tara Morris, who chose this week’s selection. “They’re colour blocked or striped, often in a heavier cotton that holds its shape but is lovely to wear.”

How to wear it: Cut to sit high at the waist, the new maxi skirt is surprisingly easy (unlike the Sienna Miller circa 2004 iteration, which was alarmingly low-slung). Wear it with a flat sandal or a very low heel, and a plain fitted top – we love Country Road’s tonal jersey tanks and Arnsdorf’s slim t-shirts.

Accessorise with: A flat sandal or a very low heel, or a plain white sneaker – after all, it’s the skirt that’s the hero here. But a chunky necklace or fun earring would be great – ELK has a selection of sculptural rubberised metal in all sorts of colours, while Lucy Folk’s yellow gold drops add another level of drama.
