How To Dress Like You’re on Holiday (Even When You’re Not)

Didn’t escape to the Mediterranean over winter? Let your wardrobe put you in a sunshine state of mind.

By Maeve Galea

We all know the old adage “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. But what about extending this sentiment even further – and dressing for the life you want, not the one you have?

Having just endured a winter where it felt like every girl and her strappy sandals swanned around sun-soaked Europe for months on end, the life I want bears little resemblance to the one I have, which entails working from home in rainy Sydney while contemplating another La Nina-afflicted summer.

But while Bondi might not have the easy, European glamour of Biarritz, it’s still possible to bring some of that breezy holiday style to everyday life, as evidenced by these photos by Daniel Goode showing how sunny, summer pieces can brighten up even the most ordinary situations.

The first step, says stylist Lucy Wood, is jettisoning anything black in favour of prints and lighter colours. Oroton, Alemais, Lucy Folk and Emma Mulholland on Holiday are all great Australian brands offering summery pieces that are the sartorial equivalent of quick shot of Aperol Spritz.

“This season the prints are feeling worldly and unstructured. Lots of florals, paisley, and abstract prints that feel like they have been painted on a European beach,” explains Wood, who suggests that now that weather is (kind of) warming up and the sun is (mostly) out it’s a great time to pull out the sandals and start swapping out black and darker tones for other neutrals like white, tan, grey or beige.

Complete the look with coloured sunglasses or tote in tan leather or a bold colour or a fun bucket hat or towel.

“Why not dress for where you’d rather be or what you’d rather be doing!?” laughs Wood. And it’s hard to argue with that, especially when the job you really want is full-time resort reviewer.
