Why You Should Go Big And Bold This Summer

Move over monochrome. Forget quiet luxury. Maximalists have more fun.

By Divya Venkataraman

When ‘dopamine dressing’ first entered our fashion vocabulary, it was all about injecting otherwise gloomy circumstances—winter, successive waves of Covid—with dashes of joy. We looked to a sphere we had control over, in an otherwise spiralling world: our wardrobes.

Now, a few years on, maximalism is reigning again, but this time, it’s not making up for anything. (Except for maybe the ‘quiet luxury’ tonal haze of recent months).

For stylist Lucy Wood, this season’s iteration of the trend is about “forgetting the classics and having fun with colour and textures.” Maximalism in the summertime is a symbiosis of wardrobe and outer world, a way of matching your look—bright, bold, joy-inducing—with the day—sunny, warm, and imbued with the loosening of restrictions that accompanies the end of a year.

Texture plays a big role this season, often with a bohemian edge. Sequins will always suit the party season, but opt for raffia spliced with leather for a touch of nouveau-boho, or crochet in a tropical palette.

Painterly prints, like those splashed on Venroy’s silk Jamaica pants, will see you through night and day, while sculptural earrings (we love Sir’s gold stacked pair below) are an easy way of adding intrigue to a casual look. “Classics in neutrals will always work… but these bring joy!,” says Wood.
