A successful mini break requires good planning, a relaxed attitude and – according to our shopping editor – a roomy holdall with both top handle and shoulder strap. “I have the Baggu weekend bag and it’s great,” says Tara, referring to the lovely blue and white bag below. “You can get a lot into it while still taking it as carry-on, it has a detachable internal pouch inside, and the strap means you can sling it over your shoulder, leaving your hands free.”
Having your hands free while travelling is a recurring theme for Tara, who I imagine standing elegantly in an airport line holding only a novel and phone, rather than carrier bags of snacks, toys and a couple of squirming children. That’s why she has chosen the Chloe bag, in a sophisticated palette of colours that will complement every choice of outfit. “It’s a cross-body bag – essential for travel, and versatile,” she adds.
The key to packing for a short trip is to keep it classic – now is not the time to choose stand-out pieces that will work with pretty much nothing else you’ve brought. For example, the paper-bag-waist Bassike pants are comfortable enough to wear all day with a trainer, but can be dressed up for evening with a silk cami, denim jacket and a gold earring, Tara says. “Similarly, the cashmere sweater works for daytime with jeans and becomes dressier with a party flat or kitten heel and an earring.”
Accessories like earrings, a silk scarf and a chic pair of sunnies (although not all at once, obviously) are perfect for elevating your look, particularly if you need to add some unexpected polish to your outfit, she adds. “These Loewe sunglasses, with their gold hardware and leather detailing, would instantly dress up a tracksuit pant and top – they’re a new, more sophisticated version of those big statement sunnies. I love them.”
