Four Designers Pick Their Favourite Current-Season Pieces

And show us how they’d style them

By Anna Saunders

We asked four Australian designers to share their favourite pieces, and how they’d style them.

Edwina Forrest, creative director AJE

The Cascade Cut Out Dress from our newly launched ‘Modernist’ collection is my pick of the summer season. The radiant sunshine yellow colour is an instant mood enhancer, and the streamlined asymmetric cut out waist contrasts to specialist pleating over the bodice and waist which feels and looks luxurious.

I’d wear it with a bold lip, simple strappy heel and an ornate piece of jewellery. It’s a piece that will stand the test of time.

Within the ‘Modernist’ collection, you will find much more of this simplistic silhouettes as we looked to the art-based movement of Modernism. For this collection, we looked to the art-based Modernist movement, and our muse was the unconventional French architect Charlotte Perriand.

Ginger & Smart creative director Genevieve Smart

My favourite pieces from our Resort 2021 collection New Dawn, are the Temperate Skirt and Top in Desert Red silk.

I love the fluidity of the silhouette and intensity of the colour, which was inspired by the red earth of the desert. It’s adjustable with drawstrings, has gold pullers and elastic giving it a relaxed elegance.

I love that I can wear it casually with flat slides, like our Fortify slides, and a satchel bag, like our Lucent cross-body satchel. Or for a formal look, use the Mayhem belt to cinch so it looks like a maxi dress, with the Splendent heels and Credence clutch.

Jade Sarita Arnott of Arnsdorf

My favourite piece to wear at the moment, which has just been released this week, is the Sandrina Shirt Dress.

I love the versatility of this dress. It’s made from organic cotton crepe so it’s really trans-seasonal. I really liked the idea of creating a long shirtdress with a nonchalant feel that could be worn loose or cinched in at the waist. I think there’s a real power and confidence in the simplicity of a beautiful white shirt dress. I wear mine to work, catch ups with friends and to my favourite places like trips to the gallery.

For cooler days, I’ll be wearing mine with my Merino Funnel Neck Skivvy and boots. For now, I really love wearing it with socks and sandals, I’m wearing my Teva Hurricanes at the moment but it would also work with Birkenstocks. It looks best with a cotton slub ribbed sock.

Marnie Goding, co-founder and designer, ELK

This summer, I’m embracing vivid accents of colour in my accessories choice, against a wardrobe of simple clean lines in neutral tones. As we have just released our new collection Jardin, choosing a favourite is always a challenge!

At the top of my list are the Karan Earrings – they make a gorgeous statement with a sparkly cluster of bugle and seed beads in colours of Moonlight, Orange and Champagne. I always love to layer bangles, so our Erland bangle set, made from sustainably sourced timber, is an everyday essential.

One of my favourite style tips is a statement necklace: it instantly transforms an outfit, and our Petal necklace is my new-season favourite in a gorgeous mix of bright contrasting colours.
