The oversized trend is here to stay, says stylist Tara Morris, which means that roomy, comfy coats are fast becoming an investment piece.

“Not only are oversized coats a key part of your wardrobe, they’re also really practical for layering,” she says. “There’s nothing worse than feeling restricted in a coat.”

That said, there are other great choices in stores right now. Whereas once the fashion mags would anoint a a key coat trend (such as the teddy, or tailored jackets) each winter, now it’s really a matter of choosing what fits your style and budget.

“If you can, I think it’s great to have a couple of coats in your wardrobe,” says Tara. “Personally, I’d always have a trench, which is great for when it’s not quite as cold; a cosy wrap coat; and a tailored coat, which you can wear to the office or a nice dinner. A good coat lasts for years, so it’s worth spending a little more for quality if you can.”

One newish coat to join the constellation is the leather jacket – well, not new exactly but certainly more prevalent than it has been for a while.

“Miu Miu and Acne Studios have really championed this trend, with their jackets and bombers being strong leaders over the past few seasons,” says Tara. “The long version is an evolution of that.”
