The New Way To Wear Your Necklaces

Meet the “neckmess”.

By Anna Saunders

Fashion stylists love to layer, and they’re obsessed with accessories. So, it should come as absolutely no surprise that one of the biggest trends of the past few summers is a combination of both these things.

The trend in question? The #Neckmess, a made-for-Instagram portmanteau that describes the artful tangle of necklaces sported by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker and more.

“Don’t overthink it. Mixing metals, textures and colours is what it’s all about.”

You know the look: a louche-yet-luxe combination of chunky chains, fine jewellery, pendants and chokers all thrown together seemingly haphazardly.

And the haphazard part is key, says PRIMER stylist Lucy Wood: “Don’t overthink it. Mixing metals, textures and colours is what it’s all about. For example, putting a crystal tennis necklace with a colourful beaded necklace is unexpected and interesting.”

Want to dabble in this trend? Look for at least three necklaces of similar but different lengths. Some necklace styles lend themselves perfectly to the trend.

“The Reliquia necklace below, where the necklace has a beaded strand combined with a gold chain combined together., is the perfect starting piece to help you with a layered look,” says Wood.
