For a simple piece of fabric, skirts certainly carry a lot of symbolism. Wearing them long suggests modesty and decorum, although anyone watching Bridgerton right now might think otherwise. Then there’s the much-vaunted hemline index, which suggests that skirt lengths rise and fall with the stock market – the shorter the hemline, says the theory, the better the economic outlook.
This season, the long winter skirt is everywhere, which might worry economists but makes us very happy.
A stylish alternative to a wide trouser, it comes in everything from silk to wool and looks great with flats and boots. It also feels very modern, with a silhouette that’s striking and fresh.

“This blanket skirt from COS is really versatile,” says Nicole. “I chose to wear it with this navy knit, but it would also work with a shirt and coat, or a boxy jacket. I like the subtlety of this classic navy and brown combo.”
Look 2
The dirndl skirt is a style we haven’t seen for a while, says Nicole, but it’s another great option for winter (fun fact: dirndls originated as peasant skirts in Germany and Austria, and have a full shape with folds tucked into the waistband).
“This is a great skirt for winter with this cute duffel, but it would also look good with a tank top in summer.”

Look 3
“The tobacco-coloured coat works beautifully with this coral skirt and top – I really love it,” says Nicole. “This would also be a very versatile skirt, which you could wear in summer with a neutral tank top and sandal.”

The mid-weight cotton in this skirt makes it feel winter-appropriate, and the shape feels modern, says Nicole. “I’d wear it on holiday, too, with a flat sandal. It’s a really handy skirt to have in your wardrobe.”
Look 5
“Wearing an oversized knit with this skirt works well, proportionally. I’d wear this with a white sneaker or even a boot with a two-to-three centimetre heel,” says Nicole.
