Three PRIMER Stylists On What They’re Buying For Spring

Vests are making a strong showing

Felicity Robinson

When we asked our stylists for their key picks for spring, a couple of pieces really stood out: vests, in any colourway you want, and cute bags.

Vests in particular are a great buy this season: as the 90s trend shows no sign of abating, they’re the perfect match for a long skirt and plain flat (we love Tara’s choice of Vibi Venezia black Mary Janes for a grounding, practical shoe).

Also making a play for our dollars? Marni’s cheerful bags, perfect for your book/towel/water bottle on those unexpectedly warm days – and it’s forecast to hit 25C in Melbourne today! Happy shopping, and sunscreen application…

Bree Macara, fashion editor and consultant
1. “I am a die-hard loafer lover but I just can’t shake these relaxed suede moccasins as a refreshing spin on things for spring.”

2. “Strictly speaking, these Celine specs are not a ‘spring’ item but, as they are an every season item, I’ll allow myself to go on about them. I’m into the shape, the colour and the opacity, and really want to call them my own. I may even go for a transition lens (you laugh, but I’m not joking) to justify the purchase further.”

3. “Obsessed with this skirt! I love the fact it’s a drawstring waist, love that it’s a true midi length and fashioned from knock-about cotton drill. It treads a perfect high/low line for my mind – especially when teamed with my new moccasins.”

4. “Last summer I bought this tank in three colours and I will absolutely be going back for more. I’m imagining this baby blue colourway with my new Verner leopard skirt as above. But also my denim shorts, printed pants, cotton skirts and sparkly separates for special occasions.”

1. “Spring is the perfect time to jump on board the vest-trend train. I love the high neckline on this particular one. I can see this styled with jeans for a more casual look, or a black trouser for night.”

2. “I love these Italian Mary-Janes by Vibi Venezia; they are so understated, which I love. I’ll be wearing them with dresses and tailored skirts throughout spring/summer.”

3. “I’m really into having a few pairs of sunglasses to choose from each day! I will be adding this pair from Nanushka to my collection – the gold moon detailing is a cute touch.”

4. “Marni Kids have the cutest woven bags, so technically I’d be buying this for my daughter, however I think I’d be using it more than her!”

Lucy Wood, fashion stylist
1. “A sarong is so versatile. This will be perfect for spring to wrap around as a skirt with an oversized shirt or tank top tucked in. A bright hit of colour that also delivers on comfort.”

2. “While I love lots of colourful printed pieces come spring, a few neutral classic staples are necessary to work back with them. This spring I’m swapping white for chocolate brown, a smart decision I think for a new mum-to-be.”

3. “I love the Marni Market ranges – they always have great summery casual bags that are an eclectic full stop to any outfit. I’m a big fan of a tote bag that works as a chuck-everything-in-it bag to go.”

4. “I’ve always found it hard to find summer sandals that are comfortable, versatile yet still bring some fun. I think these Tibi sandals tick all of those boxes.”
