One of my life goals, along with learning to bake and meeting Obama, is to become one of those women who has a clearly defined summer and winter wardrobe, packed away neatly in alternate seasons. I know that none of these aims will ever be met, mainly because I’m lazy, live in Australia and have woefully limited storage space.
Instead, I need to be able to wear my clothes all year round, which is why I look for skirts that work with t-shirts as well as long-sleeved blouses or knits. “Midi or maxi skirts are the most versatile lengths,” says our shopping editor Tara Morris, who is yet to be convinced by stories of the return of knee-length skirts. She’s included just one knee-length piece in this week’s edit – the Proenza Schouler with a tie-waist, because she loves the print.
“A pattern like the Ganni check or Munthe design means you can pick up different colours according to the season – so you might wear the Munthe skirt with a white t-shirt in summer and a black ribbed cardigan or chunky knit in colder weather,” she says. Choosing a silk or satin-crepe, like the Matteau or Lee Mathews skirts, is also smart shopping – the fabric is light enough to wear in summer and looks stylish with a heavy jumper or simple cashmere later on.
