Meet Our New Book Club Choice: Rodham

The New York Times described it as “an ingenious conceit”. The New Yorker likened it to fan fiction. Vox called it “wildly compelling”.

Me? I devoured Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld, which reimagines Hillary Rodham Clinton’s life had she not married Bill.

It’s a clever premise (and it’s familiar territory for Sittenfeld whose book American Wife offered a fictionalised take on former First Lady Laura Bush’s early life) and it rockets along like a runaway train, blending real-life events with fiction. Rodham is populated by a cast of familiar faces from Bill Clinton to, yes, Donald Trump, and it asks tough questions about the factors that thwart women from reaching the top tiers of public life.
